Election Integrity Committee Wins Important Ruling for Voters
May 24, 2008
Congratulations to Bill Risner, attorney for the Pima County Democratic Party’s Election Integrity Committee!
The Party struck a knock-out blow to governmental secrecy with its win in the Election Integrity lawsuit against the Pima County Board of Supervisors. Judge Michael Miller ruled that the Board of Supervisors must release election data from past elections to all political parties so they can fulfill their legal duty to oversee the voting process. The Board, led by Sharon Bronson, refused to release the data, claiming that it was “unsafe” to turn it over. The Democratic Party was forced to go to court to get the information it needed to do its job.
When I was Pima County Democratic Party Chair, and more recently as Co-Chair of the Pima County Election Integrity Committee, I fought alongside others in our quest for open government. I was and continue to be concerned about the Board’s undemocratic behavior. As a group, the Board wasted time and money to keep election records closed. Sharon Bronson’s actions were particularly troubling. She led in virtually every obstructionist move the Board made throughout the process.
It is my hope the Board will release the records and not delay the process by filing yet another appeal.
